The Story
Located in the seaside community of Cape Elizabeth and minutes from Portland Maine, Apple Tree Hill was built in 1850 and purchased by the Ford family of Summit NJ in 1885. The new owners hired a well known NYC architect, Joy Wheeler Dow, to expand the home consistent with the Colonial Revival period.
Only three families have owned the property since 1885.
The stately 6,489 sq ft colonial boasts fourteen rooms including five bedrooms, six bathrooms and five fireplaces. These formal yet comfortable spaces have been appropriately updated to enhance the original aesthetic. Electrical, plumbing and heating were upgraded in the last 10 years. The property has both public water and a drilled well for irrigation purposes.
The first floor consists of a contemporary gourmet kitchen which opens up to a cathedral ceiling breakfast room. The naturally bright space includes a large elevated gas fireplace, stainless steel appliances and granite counters. A formal wide-pine-wood floored dining room greets a front-to-back living room with a brick wood-burning fireplace. A traditional library/den showcases the original wood paneling and is adorned with yet another elegant fireplace. Additional first floor details include crown molding, vintage light fixtures and inviting window seats.
The original staircase leads up to the second floor which hosts a newly renovated master suite. The walk-in closet and dressing room was once a spare bedroom but is now a brightly lit space with floor to single maple built-ins and adjacent marble ensuite.
The top floor was converted from maid's quarters into an open recreation room that accesses a large balcony overlooking the grounds.
The property's 7.5 stately acres sit on high ground in the oceanfront Shores Acres neighborhood. The land boasts an 80-tree heirloom apple orchard, extensive landscaping with exquisite gardens, a sizable attached barn (c.1825), a garden house -currently used as a reading room, and a granite-slab fire pit.
The home has hosted a number of catalogue photoshoots (including Vera Bradley, L.L Bean) and has welcomed large social and charity events.
Apple Tree Hill has a charming history, incredible atmosphere and is the perfect setting for many years of moments to be shared and celebrated.
